What is Vaginal Rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation is a concept of making vaginal tissue younger and healthier. Various treatments are being advertised as vaginal rejuvenation. We have new modalities entering the field of vaginal rejuvenation, and even in Dr Novikova’s practice, new treatments have been introduced over the past few years.

Dr Novikova offers four treatments for vaginal or pelvic tightening or rejuvenation:

  • BTL Ultrafemme 360 – a ‘radiofrequency’ treatment that a trained therapist can administer
  • Femilift – a ‘CO2 laser’ treatment, is carried out by Dr Novikova in Cape Town only
  • Emsella Chair – a 30-minute session sitting fully clothed on a chair that exercises the pelvic floor muscles
  • Vaginoplasty – a surgical procedure for more serious conditions

Who should consider having vaginal rejuvenation?

Women who have:

  • vaginal relaxation (loose or too wide vagina)
  • stress urinary incontinence (leaking urine when jumping, sneezing, coughing, running)
  • dryness of the vagina (or atrophic vaginitis)
  • frequent vaginal infections have excellent results with the treatment

The field of vaginal rejuvenation is old and new at the same time. Women knew about the tightening qualities of hot stones inserted into the vagina from ancient times. It is not the treatment that women should be trying nowadays as the results are unlikely to be consistent, and the risks of harmful side effects are significant. New technologies such as laser, radiofrequency and various serums and medications are all advertised widely but have not been studied sufficiently. Good quality research takes years of planning and significant funding. The gold standard studies are randomised, controlled and double-blinded trials where the risk of bias is minimal. There are no randomised, controlled trials that have been conducted on the various modalities of vaginal tightening. What Dr Novikova offers to her patients is based on her patients’ needs and her expert opinion.
